The licence you receive, however, is not yet the \"full\" driver's licence: it is the probationary licence. For 24 months, stricter rules apply, and ignoring them can cost you dearly: zero tolerance for alcohol, a limit of 4 demerit points and, for drivers 19 or under, night-time passenger restrictions.<\/p>\n\n<p>This guide clearly explains how the probationary licence works in Quebec in 2026: how long it lasts, what it costs, the three big rules to respect, and what happens at the end of the 24 months.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"prob-hero\">\n<span class=\"prob-hero-tag\">The essentials in 10 seconds<\/span>\n<h2>24 months, zero alcohol, 4 points: the trio to remember<\/h2>\n<p>The probationary licence lasts 24 months, prohibits any alcohol before driving and tolerates only 4 demerit points. After those two years, you move on to the class 5 licence \u2014 with no further exam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"prob-h2\">What is the probationary licence?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The probationary licence is the stage between the learner's licence and the full class 5 driver's licence. You obtain it by passing the SAAQ road test, after your mandatory driving course and your minimum 12 months as a learner. Unlike the learner's licence, it lets you drive alone, without an accompanying rider. But it comes with special conditions \u2014 and that is where many new drivers get caught.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"prob-h2\">The 3 big rules of the probationary licence<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"prob-steps\">\n<div class=\"prob-step prob-step-1\">\n<div class=\"prob-step-num\">Rule 1<\/div>\n<div class=\"prob-step-title\">Zero tolerance for alcohol<\/div>\n<p>A single drop of alcohol before getting behind the wheel is an offence. The \"0.08\" rule does not apply to you: it is zero, period. Apply the same caution to cannabis and drugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"prob-step prob-step-2\">\n<div class=\"prob-step-num\">Rule 2<\/div>\n<div class=\"prob-step-title\">Maximum 4 demerit points<\/div>\n<p>An experienced driver gets 15 points; you get only 4.
