The rule that actually matters is different: the SAAQ requires 75 % on each of the three parts, separately.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Every year, thousands of Quebecers sit the SAAQ knowledge test on their way to a class 5 driver's licence. Many arrive believing a good overall average is enough. It is not, and that is why candidates who know the Highway Safety Code well still walk out without a pass.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"masq-h2\">The three parts of the test<\/h2>\n\n<p>The class 5 knowledge test is entirely multiple choice, and it is divided into three separate parts.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"masq-steps\">\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-1\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Part 1<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">The rules<\/div>\n<p>The Highway Safety Code: right of way, speed limits, and what is required of a driver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-2\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Part 2<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Signs and signals<\/div>\n<p>Road signs, traffic lights and pavement markings, and what each one asks you to do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-3\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Part 3<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Driving behaviour<\/div>\n<p>The safe driving behaviours and techniques expected of a driver on the road.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-4\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">The rule<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">75 % on each<\/div>\n<p>You need 75 % in all three parts. Fall below on a single part and the whole test has to be taken again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"masq-warn\">\n<div class=\"masq-warn-title\">\u26a0 A 75 % average is not enough<\/div>\n<p>This is the most common misunderstanding. The SAAQ does not add your scores together. A candidate who gets 90 % on the rules and 60 % on signs and signals has not passed, even though the average is well above 75 %.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the part you neglect decides the outcome, not the part you have mastered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"masq-h2\">How many questions? What the SAAQ actually publishes<\/h2>\n\n<p>It is the question everyone asks before the test, and the honest answer is that the SAAQ does not publish the exact number of questions on the official test. What it does state is the duration: allow between 30 and 60 minutes.<\/p>\n\n<p>The SAAQ does, however, provide an official practice quiz online. Its sets run to 30 questions for signs and signals, traffic rules or driving, and 10 questions for illustrated situation scenarios. The SAAQ itself notes that this tool is not a replica of the test you have to pass. Use it to train, not to guess the format on the day.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"masq-h2\">Before you go in<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"masq-tips\">\n<div class=\"masq-tips-title\">The checklist<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\">\u2713 Hold a learner's licence that has been valid for at least 10 months on the day of the test<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\">\u2713 Bring your learner's licence or a piece of photo identification<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\">\u2713 Allow between 30 and 60 minutes on site<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\">\u2713 Pay the SAAQ test fee of $13.50<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"masq-info\">\n<p>The knowledge test fee is $13.50. That is not a coincidence, the program is built for it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-card\">\n<div class=\"masq-card-title\">Study signs separately<\/div>\n<p>This is the part that catches the most candidates out, because it has to be memorised and cannot be reasoned through. A sign you have never seen cannot be improvised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-card\">\n<div class=\"masq-card-title\">Do full sets<\/div>\n<p>Answering five questions a day does not prepare you for the pace of a timed test.
