The good news: Quebec signs follow a logic of families. Learn the logic, not the signs one by one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Many candidates study road signs as a memory game: hundreds of signs to memorize one at a time. It is the longest and least reliable method. Quebec's road network is organized into families of signs, each with its function, colours and shapes. Once you recognize the family, you can guess the message even in front of a sign you have never seen.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"masq-h2\">Why this part deserves your attention<\/h2>\n\n<p>A reminder of the rule: the knowledge test has three parts (rules of the road, signs and signals, driving behaviours) and each requires 75 %, separately. A brilliant overall average does not make up for a failed signs part. The four families to master first for the exam:<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"masq-steps\">\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-1\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Family 1<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Regulatory signs<\/div>\n<p>Obligations and prohibitions: stop, speed limits, one-ways, forbidden turns. This is the family that gives orders, and the one that weighs heavily on the exam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-2\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Family 2<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Warning signs<\/div>\n<p>Alerting you to an obstacle or imminent danger: curve, slippery surface, school crossing. Generally yellow diamonds, to be read as warnings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-3\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Family 3<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Guide signs<\/div>\n<p>Informing: destinations, distances, street names, points of interest and services. These signs inform, they order nothing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step masq-step-4\">\n<div class=\"masq-step-num\">Family 4<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-step-title\">Special zones<\/div>\n<p>School zones, work zones, photo radar: contexts where signage changes the usual rules and where the exam likes to draw its questions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"masq-info\">\n<p>The signs part is not limited to sign panels: traffic lights and road markings are part of it too. A solid double line or an arrow on the pavement are \"signals\" just as much as a sign is.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"masq-h2\">The method that works<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"masq-tips\">\n<div class=\"masq-tips-title\">Studying road signs intelligently<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\"><strong>Start with the families.<\/strong> Shape, colour, function. Once the logic is in place, every sign becomes a variation, not a new lesson.<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\"><strong>Work on the look-alike pairs.<\/strong> Exam mistakes rarely come from the obvious signs, but from the nuances: prohibition versus obligation, priority versus yield.<\/div>\n<div class=\"masq-tip\"><strong>Tie every sign to an action.<\/strong> Do not remember \"this sign means X\", remember \"in front of this sign, I do Y\".
