Are you preparing to take the SAAQ road test to get your probationary license? It’s the most important step in the process, and also the most stressful for many students. However, with the right preparation, it’s entirely possible to pass on your first attempt. Here are tips from our instructors at Vision Plus to help you prepare effectively.
How does the SAAQ road test work?
Generally, the SAAQ road test lasts between 25 and 35 minutes. A SAAQ examiner gets into your vehicle and observes your driving in real conditions. Specifically, you’ll be evaluated on vehicle control, compliance with road signs, visual checks, parking maneuvers, and your overall driving behaviour. Therefore, it’s essential to understand what the examiner expects from you before test day.
How to prepare for the SAAQ road test
First of all, the best preparation starts well before exam day. During your practical lessons, pay close attention to your instructor’s feedback, as every correction corresponds to a point the examiner will check. Additionally, at Vision Plus, our instructors know the test routes used at SAAQ centres near our schools in Laval, Saint-Jérôme, Sainte-Thérèse, and Mascouche. As a result, they prepare you specifically for these routes.
Most common mistakes to avoid
Here are the most frequent reasons for failure that our instructors observe over the years:
Insufficient visual checks — this is the number one mistake. Failing to check blind spots before changing lanes or turning often leads to failure. Therefore, make it a habit to turn your head, not just your eyes.
Not following road signs — an incomplete stop at a stop sign or even slight speeding can result in immediate failure. In fact, the examiner pays close attention to these details.
Excessive nervousness — stress can make you forget things you normally do well. So, breathe calmly, take your time, and drive the way you do during your lessons.
Parking maneuvers — practice parallel parking and three-point turns until they become automatic. These are maneuvers the examiner asks for almost every time during the SAAQ road test.
Tips for exam day
First, arrive a few minutes early to avoid unnecessary stress. Then, make sure the vehicle is in good condition, as the examiner will check the lights, turn signals, and brakes. If you don’t have a vehicle available, Vision Plus offers insured vehicle rentals that meet all SAAQ requirements.
Also, turn off your phone and adjust your mirrors and seat before starting. By showing the examiner that you are methodical and in control, you start off on the right foot.
What to do if you fail the SAAQ road test?
Failing is not the end of the world. You can retake the SAAQ road test by booking a new appointment on SAAQclic. At Vision Plus, we offer refresher courses starting at $60 + taxes per session to work specifically on the areas that need improvement.
