SAAQ knowledge test practice: where to train for free

No need to buy an app or a $30 "mock exam". The best resources for practising the knowledge test are free, and most come straight from the SAAQ. Here they are, and here is how to use them.

Every week, candidates show up to the test after grinding through dozens of quizzes found online, and still fail. The problem is not the amount of practice, it is the source and the method. This article reviews the resources worth your time and proposes a simple routine that gets you to the 75% required in each of the three parts.

1. The SAAQ's official knowledge test

It is resource number one, and it is free. The SAAQ offers an online knowledge test on its website that works in sets of 30 questions, including 10 illustrated scenarios, with an immediate result. Questions change from one set to the next, so you can repeat it without going in circles.

Its limit, in the SAAQ's own words: this test is not a replica of the official exam. It is there to train you on the format and measure your progress, not to predict your score. We explain the difference in can you take the SAAQ knowledge test online?

2. The SAAQ's free guides

Driver's Handbook (Guide de la route)

The official reference: traffic rules, road signs, right of way. The test questions flow from this content. Available free as a PDF on the SAAQ website.

Driving a Passenger Vehicle

The manual covering techniques and safe driving behaviours: the material for the third part of the test, the scenario questions.

You do not have to read these guides cover to cover. Use them backwards: after a set of the online test, open the chapter matching each question you missed. It is the fastest way to turn a mistake into a rule you understand.

3. The theory modules of your driving course

The 12 modules of the SAAQ-approved driving course are built on the same three blocks as the test: rules, signs, behaviours. The course material, the exercises done in class and the instructor's questions are therefore direct practice for the test. Students who review their modules before each set of the online test progress much faster than those who only do the test.

What to avoid

Unofficial "SAAQ" question sets

No website or app owns the SAAQ's question bank. Some paid tools are fine, but others mix in rules from other provinces, signs that do not exist in Quebec or outdated versions of the Highway Safety Code. If you use one, check every doubtful rule against the Driver's Handbook. And be wary of any site promising to let you "take the test online": the official test is taken only at a service centre.

A practice routine that works

Week 1
Diagnosis

Two sets of the official test without studying. Note your results by part. You now know where to focus.

Weeks 2 and 3
One topic a day

Right of way, signs, distances, alcohol, sharing the road: 20 minutes of guide or module, then one set of the test. Fix every mistake at the source.

Week 4
Consistency

One set a day. The goal is not a perfect score, it is three sets in a row above 75% in each of the three parts.

Test day
Book and show up

Once your 10 months on the learner's licence are up and your results are stable, book your appointment. Bring your ID and an accepted payment method.

For the test structure and how the score is calculated, read the 3 parts and the pass mark. For the two topics that fail the most candidates, our guides on road signs and scenario questions go straight to the point.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice sets should I do before the test?

There is no magic number. The right signal is consistency: several sets in a row above 75% in every part, without dropping back.

Is the SAAQ online test available in English too?

Yes, the practice test is offered in French and English. So is the official test, which can also be requested in Modern Standard Arabic, Spanish or Mandarin.

How much does the official test cost?

$13.50, paid at the service centre. If you fail, you must wait at least 28 days and pay again.

Do I need a driving course to take the knowledge test?

Yes. In Quebec, a course at an SAAQ-approved driving school is mandatory for a first Class 5 licence, and you must complete Phase 1 to get the learner's licence.

Theory taught by instructors, not by an app

SAAQ-approved driving school, 5 branches from Laval to Saint-Jérôme. Complete Class 5 course for $999 + taxes, 12 theory modules included.
