Can You Take the SAAQ Knowledge Test Online?

Can you take the SAAQ knowledge test online?

Thousands of people search "SAAQ knowledge test online" every month. The short answer: the official test is taken in person. What is online is something else, and it is very useful once you know how to use it.

The confusion is understandable. The SAAQ does offer a free knowledge test on the Internet, with real multiple-choice questions. But that test has nothing to do with the exam that leads to your licence. Here is what really happens online, what happens at the service centre, and how to get the most out of both.

The clear answer: the official test takes place at a service centre

The Class 5 knowledge test is taken only at an SAAQ service centre, by appointment, with your identification documents. It costs $13.50, and you must have held your learner's licence for at least 10 months to sit it. No platform, no school and no website can administer the official test remotely.

Why isn't it online? The test is an official exam that opens the door to the road. The SAAQ verifies your identity on site and administers the test in a controlled setting. That is also what guarantees the result is truly yours.

What really exists online: the SAAQ practice test

The SAAQ provides a free knowledge test on its website. It works in sets of 30 questions, 10 of which are illustrated scenario questions, and gives you your result immediately. It is an official practice tool drawn from the same material as the exam, but the SAAQ itself states that it is not a replica of the real test.

Online test (practice)

Free, no appointment, repeat as often as you like. Use it to measure where you stand and get used to the question format. It does not count.

Official test (service centre)

By appointment, $13.50, ID required. Three parts, 75% required in each. This is the one that counts toward your licence.

How to use the online test wisely

Step 1
Do a first set without studying

You will see right away which notions are solid and which escape you. That is your starting point, not a verdict.

Step 2
Study by theme, not by question

A missed question on right of way often hides a misunderstood rule. Go back to the course theory for that theme, then do another set.

Step 3
Repeat until you are consistent

One good result can be luck. Three sets in a row above 75% in every part is a real signal.

Step 4
Book the official test

When your results are stable and your 10 months on the learner's licence are up, book your appointment. Our guide shows how.

Beware of sites promising "the exam online"

What you will find on the Internet

Many sites sell "SAAQ exams" or question banks. Some are honest review tools; others recycle old questions or rules from other provinces. None replaces the official test, and none knows the exact makeup of the real exam, which the SAAQ does not publish. The most reliable source remains the SAAQ's free test, backed by a recognized driving course.

The real path to the knowledge test

The process is set by the SAAQ. You complete Phase 1 of the driving course (the first five modules), you obtain your learner's licence, then you wait at least 10 months before you can take the official knowledge test. During those months you continue the course and drive with an accompanying driver. We detail every step in our guide to the licence steps.

As for the preparation itself, it all comes down to understanding the three parts of the exam. Our article on the 3 parts and the pass mark explains how the score is calculated, and our guides on road signs and scenario questions cover the two themes that trip up the most candidates.
