Renting a Car for the SAAQ Exam: Price and How It Works

Here is a detail many candidates discover too late: the SAAQ does not provide any vehicle for the road test. It is up to you to show up with a car that is safe, in good mechanical condition, registered and insured — and if it fails the examiner's inspection, the test is cancelled and you leave with a new appointment to book.

The simplest solution? Rent your driving school's vehicle for the big day. This guide explains why that is often the best choice, what the SAAQ requires of the vehicle, and how it works at Vision Plus.

Did you know?

The SAAQ does not provide a car for the exam

Candidates must show up with their own compliant, insured vehicle. A defect as simple as a burned-out headlight can get the exam cancelled — and with current wait times, the next appointment can be months away.

What the SAAQ requires of the exam vehicle

According to the SAAQ's official rules for the class 5 road test, you must show up with a safe vehicle in good mechanical condition, along with its documents:

✓ The examiner's list
✓ A safe vehicle in good mechanical condition (brakes, headlights, turn signals, tires, parking brake…)
✓ The valid, signed registration certificate
✓ Paper proof of liability insurance
✓ Your learner's licence and your driving course attestation
✓ Space for the removable "Examen de conduite" sign installed by the examiner
⚠ If the vehicle fails the inspection

The SAAQ rule is clear: if the inspection reveals the vehicle does not meet the applicable standards, you will not be allowed to take the road test and will have to make another appointment. You lose your slot — and in summer 2026, the next availability is often months away. It is the scenario to avoid at all costs.

Why rent the school's vehicle?

Reason 1
A vehicle guaranteed compliant

The school car is inspected, maintained, registered and insured for the exam. The risk of failing the inspection drops to zero — and every document is in order.

Reason 2
A car you already know

It is the one from your in-car lessons: same adjustments, same blind spots, same brake feel. On exam day, every familiar cue helps you manage the stress.

Reason 3
No insurance surprises

With the family car, you have to think about the paper insurance proof and the signed registration. With the school vehicle, everything is ready when you arrive.

Reason 4
An exam in the same conditions as your lessons

The road test lasts about 30 minutes and the passing score is 75%. Spending those 30 minutes in a familiar environment puts every chance on your side.

How much does it cost at Vision Plus?

À la carte rental: $90 + tax

Rental of an insured school vehicle for the duration of your SAAQ road test. Available to our students at every branch, subject to availability — book early.

Included with Vision+ ($1,199 + tax)

The Vision+ program includes the exam vehicle rental, a private SAAQ exam preparation session, an extra in-car lesson and phone booking for your practice outings.

Either way, you arrive at the exam with the car from your lessons, documents in hand.

How to book your rental

Our students book their exam vehicle rental directly with their branch — Laval, Sainte-Thérèse, Saint-Jérôme, Mascouche or Laval – Duvernay — ideally as soon as the exam date is confirmed on SAAQclic. Weekends and month-ends go fast, especially in peak season. And to maximize your chances on the big day, review our guide to passing the road test on your first try.

FAQ: renting a car for the SAAQ exam

Q1: Does the SAAQ provide a vehicle for the road test?

No, never. The SAAQ states it clearly: candidates must show up with a safe vehicle in good mechanical condition. No compliant vehicle, no exam.

Q2: Can I take the exam with my parents' car?

Yes, as long as it is in good mechanical condition, registered (signed certificate) and insured (paper proof). Also think about comfort: a car you never drive adds unnecessary stress on exam day.

Q3: How much does the school vehicle rental cost?

At Vision Plus: $90 + tax for the duration of the exam, or included in the Vision+ program at $1,199 + tax, which also includes a private exam preparation session and an extra in-car lesson.

Q4: What if I fail the exam with the rented vehicle?

Failing has nothing to do with the vehicle: you can retake the exam after the SAAQ's minimum 28-day wait, and rent the school vehicle again for the retake if you wish.
